School Board unanimously approves phased Master Plan approach for modernization and expansion of Sumner High School

At the June 18 School Board meeting, Superintendent Dent presented two recommendations to the Board regarding the path forward for Sumner High School’s modernization and expansion project. The School Board unanimously approved:

  • Implementation of the Sumner High School Project Review Task Force's recommendation for a phased Master Plan approach for the modernization and expansion of Sumner High School, which consists of an Initial Phase to be built now, and a future buildout of facilities under the Master Plan.
  • Engaging consultants to plan for a bond proposition, which is necessary to carry out buildout of the Master Plan, with the goal to put a bond proposition before the voters as soon as reasonably possible.

Next, the District will form a Facilities Steering Committee that will work with a construction management firm, with the assistance of a facilitator, to consider the facilities and timing of full buildout of the Master Plan as well as other District needs. Stay tuned for more information on the Facilities Steering Committee and the SHS project timeline.

Update-The SHS Project Review Task Force met for its third meeting on April 30 to continue its review and evaluation, in light of state and local circumstances, of the High School modernization and expansion project.  Further development of the Master Plan concepts, to be built out in phases, was presented to the Task Force.

The Initial Phase would implement the goals of the 2016 Capital Projects Bond, including needed additional classrooms, a new commons and kitchen, a new library, and improved circulation in the High School. Each concept also included a Master Plan to evaluate the Initial Phase in relationship to future buildout, including potential facilities.

The Task Force also considered different timelines for planning and construction of facilities under a Master Plan and supported separate bond funding to complete future buildout under a Master Plan. The public is invited to the Task Force’s final meeting on May 14 from 8-10 a.m. in the District Central Office. March 26, 2019 Meeting Notes

Sumner High School Task Force Minutes 3-26-19

  • The Sumner-Bonney Lake School District’s Sumner High School Project Review Task Force met for its introductory meeting on Tuesday, March 26th. The Task Force was convened to provide advice to the District on how to proceed with modernizing and expanding Sumner High School in light of current state and local circumstances. At the meeting, the Superintendent recognized the legacy of the significant connection between Sumner High School and the community and the importance of evaluating the project in the context of the entire campus to continue that legacy for future generations. The Task Force was introduced to the project, was provided background on the goals of the 2016 Bond measure, and learned about changed circumstances since the Bond passage and project constraints.

Hainline & Associates, an experienced construction management firm in educational facilities, engaged by the District to assist the Task Force to develop a path forward for the project and the Sumner High School campus, provided the Task Force with an outline of how they will work iteratively with the Task Force to develop, evaluate and narrow options for the path forward. The Task Force members provided Hainline with a list of questions and information desired to inform their work. The list included items such as the condition of the current buildings, clarification on the project budget, the need to increase classroom capacity for programs, the facilities and uses on the campus, and many more.

The Task Force will meet again on Wednesday, April 16th, at the Sumner District Central Office, from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m.
