State Assessments

Knowing which students are ready for career, college and life, and knowing how well our schools are preparing all students, are important parts of our state’s accountability system. State testing, which takes place in the spring, provides a key measure to help education leaders, teachers, and parents improve student learning.

This spring, students in grades 3-8 took the Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBA) in math and English language arts (ELA). 5th and 8th graders will took the Measurements of Student Progress (MSP) assessment in science. Teachers use these tests to measure student progress and gain valuable insight into areas where students might benefit from additional help or accelerated learning opportunities.

The results from the SBA assessments are designed to give a more accurate picture of whether students are on track to be college and career ready after high school. Students are scored on a 1 to 4 scale. Students who score a 3 or 4 are on target to be collee and career ready by the end of 12th grade.
